Lightning Head aka Biggabush: The RE:UP Interview

lion head
Featured in our very first publication and in multiple issues afterwards, Glyn ‘Bigga’ Bush is a RE:UP favorite - his production, his songwriting, his deejay skills and his—errr—her live performance presence is a force to be reckoned with. RE:UP caught up with Bush to discuss his Lion Head Record Label and his latest Lightning Head project. El head sound, ya’ll.

OK - let’s cover this first: ‘Biggabush’ is an easy enough alias to understand, stemming from your last name. But where does ‘Lightning Head’ come from?
Originally it was something I read in an interview with Lee Scratch Perry, about ideas or inspiration striking like lightning. If you Google it you get stuff on martial arts gear and the Tampa Bay Lightning head coach is quite high in the ratings too.

What made you decide to take the plunge and launch Lion Head and how is this different from when you and Richard started the Different Drummer imprint in the days of Rockers Hi-Fi?
When Different Drummer started it was really the brainchild of Richard and the Rockers’ manager, Continue reading ‘Lightning Head aka Biggabush: The RE:UP Interview’

The whole 45th Floor of World Trade Center #7 was the venue while The Budos Band (RE:UP Issue 15) and Tim Love Lee played. The 40,000 sqft raw space was Continue reading ‘Gorgeous Views & Free Booze’

The Madlib Invasion: Miami

One of the things I miss most about living in California is being close to the Stones Throw epicenter. So when Madlib invades Miami’s local hot spot Laundry Bar, you know its bound to draw yours truly.

Madlib Invades Miami\'s Laundry Bar

Standing room only is the norm at this spot so waiting till 2am for the Beat Konducta to drop some gems took some composure, a friendly bartender and lots of shoe cleaner the next morning..

Standing Room Only for Madlib

Saving the night from the opening acts, DJ Self-Born controlled the Continue reading ‘The Madlib Invasion: Miami’

Mapei at The Wired Store

Mapei did a couple raps at The Wired Store yesterday for the Downtown Records Showcase. She abused the mic in the midst of energy efficient laptops and a 2009 $45K Lincoln MKS. Also, it’s been a while since I last heard Amanda Blank unleash some verbal artillery. She obviously didn’t lose a step, when she grabbed the mic in-between Mapei’s set. Both raucous female MC’s will be releasing albums in the near future on Downtown Recs. Read more about Mapei in RE:UP Issue 16.
