Scene Specialist: Interview with Photographer Ryan Schude

Photographer Ryan Schude just finished shooting the fashion feature for RE:UP 16, but before letting him loose we hit him with a quick Q&A — his photos are so striking, his scenes so involved, we had to learn more. Living and working out of the Forge Studio in Los Angeles, Ryan is mainly concerned with editorial portraiture and is also busy developing a series around narrative tableau. Along with his contributions to RE:UP Magazine, you can keep an eye out for upcoming work in Flaunt and Esquire Magazine.

How long have you been shooting and what’s your background?

I started shooting casually in 1997, mostly street and travel photos until about 2001 when the first experiments in portraiture began…

Per Se Chef Heads West Coast for new Thomas Keller Venture

The culinary powerhouse that is Thomas Keller, a Michelin 3-star chef and owner of Yountville’s French Laundry and Per Se — two restaurants that set the absolute standard in fine dining, has announced plans for a new L.A. restaurant. This direct from the Eater: “We’ve been spreading rumors about this for a while now, but today all is confirmed: Thomas Keller is opening a Bouchon in LA. It’ll be 11,000 square feet over two floors, complete with balconies. The chef will be Rory Herman, currently chef at the private dining room of Per Se.”

All this exclusive information and you’d think the Eater could spell Chef Rory Herrmann’s name right. Though we guess that’s not as bad as the LA Times, who spelled the name wrong, and then annotated with a correction — which they also, um, spelled wrong.

Totally Rad: New York in the 80’s

The Paul Kasmin Gallery is pleased to present Totally Rad: New York in the 80s, an exhibition of major paintings, sculptures and works on paper that characterize a decade when New York was the center of a new art world. The show will run July 10 through September 6th.

In June of 1980, Collaborative Projects organized the Times Square Show, held in a former bus depot and massage parlor, allowing artists like Jean-Michel Basquiat and Julian Schnabel to exhibit work in the newly-revived city. Institutional support followed from P.S.1 with New York/New Wave, which galvanized the careers of young talent in an unprecedented fashion…

Ladies Vie For Miami Arm Wrestling Title

Now, I love me some Over the Top. Every time Stallone turns that raggedy-ass hat of his around, you know shit’s about to get serious! Or in his own words, “When the switch goes on, I feel like a machine.” But when the ladies go for the glory that arm wrestling undeniably provides? Well…sounds like a solid Wednesday to me. It’s all taking place in downtown Miami @ PS14 (28 NE 14th ST).

New Henrik Vibskov Concept Store in Oslo

Former teenage B-boy, filmmaker, current street drummer and rising fashion heavy, Henrik Vibskov, has released details for a second concept store in Olso, Norway, in the downtown zone not far from the central train station, off the well known Karl Johan Street (Tollbugate 15 A/B 0152). After speculation of an opening in the trendier city of Berlin, the Saint Martins graduate surprised many with the announcement — but then, that’s the Vibskov style. As in his well documented November 2006 show, when he covered the runway with foam breasts, and which earned him a checkout as a rising Danish designer from Vogue. The store will not only carry his line but also a classic range of labels including Bernhard Willhelm, Cosmic Wonder, Bless, Raf Simons, and Comme des Garçons. Doors open August 1.

WILLIAM BENJAMIN BENSUSSEN :::: AKA THE MOTHER FUCKING GASLAMP KILLER

Our favorite death-to-the-world DJ, a 666 friendly pseudo sadist, but definite lover-at-heart has just tipped us off to a download link accessing the very first official Gaslamp Killer mix, or what he calls his “Opus,” circa 2000 — of which, coincidentally, 2000 copies were pressed. Well, those originals are long gone, but The Gaslamp Killer has kindly uploaded the mix for all of the latecomers to enjoy.

Download: GLK OG Mix #1

You might want to check his blog out, too — along with his flyers and strange detritus, he likes to post the occasional Youtube video, like this Gumby Bangin’ Horses gem, below:
