Scottish Rub-a-Dub

Scotch
Mungo’s Hi-Fi has been releasing killer roots reggae since 2001, but have really stepped up their game since linking up with the Scotch Bonnet crew. Scotch Bonnet also recently aquired the services of the very excellent Jahtari Riddim Force from Germany, producing reggae and dub that combines Nintendo-style lasers with booming bass and riddims you’d expect from the classic ’80’s digi-dancehall era. Check Jahtari’s earlier 7″ release off Bastard Jazz. Ruff and Tuff!

Download a crushing live set from Mungo’s Hi-Fi at the Shamabala festival this summer, running all dubplates and originial Scotch Bonnet Riddims. Well worth the 45 second wait to download.

Here is a Review by Dub Traffik’s Frontman Prince Zohar giving props to the 8-bit dub rootical style:

“Empress” by Disrupt and Jahtari Riddim Force- Featuring Mikey Murka 10″ (Scotch Bonnett Records)
As happy as I am with my upcoming version on the ‘Janet Sinclair’ rhythm- (on Murder on Golden Hill coming this winter), when I heard this devastating cut on the same rhythm by Leipzig, Germany’s DISRUPT- a great new digital dancehall producer with the JAHTARI crew- I knew I had been beat and beat good. “Empress” features 80’s London dancehall OG Mikey Murka on vox, and this is a simply CRUSHING version with a tight, stripped-down, hard digital rhythm and lower than mud bassline that works perfectly with Murka’s buttery vocal delivery. Every time I drop this record in the dancehall people start moving and record freaks who haven’t heard it are always to sure to ask me about it afterwards.
Their deft handling on the B-side by Jahtari producer ROOTAH is wicked as well. In general, Scotch Bonnett (label run by Scotland’s Mungos Hi-Fi Soundystem), has been putting out some ace releases with great stuff from a great lineup with the likes of Brother Culture, Carl Meeks, Kenny Knots, MC Soom T, Murka, many others plus insane dubs from the best production teams in Europe today. I didn’t think I liked digital dub/dancehall until I started getting into this stuff- rhythms that don’t get cheezy or clubby but stay hard, tight, and in the pocket for the reggae dancehall crowd but do something new and innovative to keep it fresh and original. They’ve got that 80’s UK dancehall thing on lock-down with a modern twist- and it works everytime.
A new 12″ ‘Elders” just dropped with a cut by Finnish dubsteppers ‘CLOUDS’ with remixes by Ras Amerlock and Jahtari’s Rootah once again- I’ll be seeking it out and giving it a review here soon. But I’m definitely interested in more stuff from Disrupt- the production on Empress is incredible
